Tonbridge & Malling and Tunbridge Wells Dementia Friendly Communities.

Hello everyone,

It begins to feel as if spring is just around the corner and it's great to have something to look forward to. We all need something to be optimistic about.
A couple of weeks ago I had an excellent meeting with Paul Barnard who is Senior Volunteer and Community Officer at Ightham Mote.
Paul is very keen to support people living with dementia and their care partners. We have put 2 dates in the diary and I will be canvassing the groups over the next few weeks to see who would like to go for a visit. The first date is May 8th and will replace a bowls club cafe afternoon and the second is on Thursday May 29th which is a fifth Thursday with very little going on.
Most people will be able to make their own way to Ightham as it's so close, but if you don't have your own transport and would like to go please let me know so I can arrange to get you there. Ightham Mote is geared up for people with disabilities and they will make sure that you are all able to enjoy the visits. For those who would like to, there will be the opportunity to help plant out in the walled garden, there is a lovely cafe and large gift shop. They are not charging us for this although we will make a contribution. I'm a great believer in the feel good factor of open air and nature so I hope these visits will lift spirits.
In advance of those visits we shall be delivering dementia awareness training to the volunteers at Ightham Mote

Last month I was pleased to do some dementia awareness training with the staff of Home Instead Maidstone branch at Yalding. Over 2 evenings I spoke to 50 members of staff who were all interested and engaged.  It's good that, between us, Lindsey, Bridget and I are providing these awareness sessions pretty much twice a month to different groups. I am so encouraged that more and more people are seeking knowledge about the condition.
Hope you al have an enjoyable month

With love
Chris P

Our visit from Tom was very enjoyable and interesting, even if he did eat his weight in chocolate. It's good for us all to be able to ask questions and vent our anger about some of the unfairness in a broken care system. Thank you Tom for taking it all on the chin.
We have no visitors at our March meeting, just us and a chance to catch up with friends.

Whether you support people that have dementia or have a personal connection, there is no other training course available that will give you a deeper understanding than the Virtual Dementia Tour. Created 25 years ago, experienced in 24 countries and by over 6 million people, this scientifically and medically proven method of allowing you to experience what it might be like to have mid-stage dementia, is the best way to build an empathetic and inclusive care pathway.  The Virtual Dementia Tour uses specially developed equipment to change your sensory perceptions to allow you a window into their world and experience what people with dementia experience daily. It is not suitable for anyone with a dementia diagnosis or epilepsy.

Tonbridge & Malling and Tunbridge Wells Dementia friendly Communities.

Hello everyone,
I hope you are all well and safe from the dreadful weather. During January we shall hold our quarterly meeting of the group on the 27th and I will report back on that in the next newsletter. Lindsey Nathan who has agreed to take on some of the heavy lifting as deputy chair represented us at the quarterly Kent Dementia Action Alliance meeting and will in future be taking responsibility for those businesses in our two boroughs who sign up for the dementia friendly business scheme.
Our Tonbridge cafe had a very welcome visit from  Alice Rose and her music skills which had us rocking, literally. Alice will be back with us in the summer.
Our Tunbridge Wells cafe continue to meet in the library at Showfields and we thank the Kent library service for allowing this.
We've experienced some sad losses lately and we continue to support those caregivers who are now facing a new and uncertain future.

With love
Chris P
